The Justice Ecosystem
Many parts of our justice ecosystem in the United States are nearly suffocating under staggering workloads. Law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, and others struggle to fulfill their respective responsibilities in a timely way on a tight budget. All have the same mission—to fight crime.
Take as an example the legally mandated process of issuing, serving, and retiring a warrant. It requires the coordination of several independent but closely related agencies, each chartered with protecting public safety while preserving individual rights. If any one agency fails to exercise due diligence in its responsibilities, the entire warrant process must start again, burning already scarce resources and delaying action by law enforcement to protect the public safety.
Between the issue of the original complaint and when it is quashed, most of the warrant process is paper-based, taking hours or days and sometimes even weeks to complete. Manual efforts consume critical time, valuable money, and precious public safety resources. Resources better spent elsewhere.
